Some love stories begin with two people who seem to come from completely different worlds. For Jaee and Gerard, those differences became part of what brought them together.

Gerard grew up in the quiet countryside of Ireland, surrounded by green fields, rainy days and local pubs. Jaee, with her Indian heritage and upbringing in Los Angeles, came from a very different environment, shaped by the energy of city life.

Their paths eventually crossed in New York, where they were working in entirely different professions. What started with after-work drinks in dive bars soon became something much more meaningful. There was plenty of teasing about Gerard's countryside roots and Jaee's city-girl outlook, but somewhere between the conversations and the laughter, a connection grew.

Years later, that connection brought them to Malta for a wedding celebration reflecting the different cultures, personalities and people who had shaped their lives.

A Welcome Celebration in Valletta

Their wedding celebrations began on 2 October with a welcome gathering at the historic Saluting Battery in Valletta.

Overlooking Malta's Grand Harbour, this remarkable historic venue offered a fitting setting for the start of their celebrations, bringing together the people who had travelled to share this important chapter with them.

For Jaee and Gerard, the gathering was about much more than the setting. From our conversations before the wedding, one thing was particularly clear: they were looking forward to spending quality time with friends and family they had not seen for some time.

They wanted their different circles to come together, reconnect and celebrate as one.

It is a beautiful reminder of what destination weddings can offer. Beyond the ceremony itself, there is an opportunity to create shared experiences with the people who matter most.

A Western–Indian Wedding at Villa Bologna

On Sunday, 4 October, the celebrations moved to Villa Bologna, one of Malta's historic garden wedding venues, located in Attard.

With its elegant architecture, Mediterranean gardens and distinctive character, Villa Bologna provided the setting for a celebration bringing together Western and Indian influences.

The wedding preparations were arranged at Corinthia Attard, while the ceremony and reception centred around Villa Bologna.

Family involvement was an important consideration in the ceremony arrangements. Jaee and Gerard had carefully planned how their families and wedding party would be included, reflecting the significance of bringing their loved ones together.

The wedding was never simply about following one tradition. Instead, the couple wanted to make room for different elements of their backgrounds while creating a celebration that felt entirely their own.

Two Wedding Looks, One Personal Story

Another distinctive element of Jaee and Gerard's wedding was their attention to their two wedding looks.

Their plans included Indian wedding attire, with Jaee selecting a design by Seema Gujral, followed by a change into eveningwear for the later celebrations.

During our planning conversations, Jaee and Gerard specifically wanted to ensure that both outfits would receive equal attention in their photographs.

Rather than allowing the portrait sessions to dominate the day, we worked on a photography schedule that would balance creative couple portraits with time for their guests.

This balance is something I always value when photographing weddings. Beautiful portraits have their place, but so do the unscripted interactions, conversations, gestures and moments that happen naturally around them.

Both are important parts of a wedding story.

An Evening of Music, Dancing and Connection

Music was another essential part of the atmosphere Jaee and Gerard wanted to create.

The couple selected Cordia String Quartet for their ceremony, while their evening plans included saxophone entertainment and a DJ.

Their choice of Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye for their first dance and Levels by Avicii as the intended closing track gave a glimpse of their musical tastes.

As the evening unfolded, the photographs show guests dancing beneath strings of fairy lights, with a saxophonist performing nearby.

There is a wonderful energy in these images. Guests are caught smiling, moving to the music and enjoying the celebration without worrying about the camera.

These are the moments that give documentary wedding photography its meaning. They are not about perfection or elaborate poses. They are about people being themselves, surrounded by those they love.

A Wedding That Brought Different Worlds Together

What makes Jaee and Gerard's wedding story meaningful is not simply the combination of Indian and Irish backgrounds or the choice of two beautiful Maltese venues.

It is the intention behind the celebrations.

From the very beginning, they wanted to make space for their families, celebrate their different backgrounds and bring together friends who had shared different chapters of their lives.

Their story began with two people from different worlds finding common ground in New York. Their wedding in Malta became another expression of that connection.

And for me, that is what makes a wedding worth documenting: not only how everything looks, but the personal story and relationships behind it.
