AX Palazzo Capua is a 200-year-old building that has been dominating the Sliema landscape ever since its conception. The Palazzo is a splendid monument that has set its landmark as one of the oldest and finest buildings in Sliema, making it the ideal location for your romantic and luxury accommodation in Malta. Brimming with history and memories from the older years, the Palazzo shares various services and facilities as those of its sister and adjoining hotels – AX The Palace and AX The Victoria Hotel in Sliema.

General information

Located in the heart of Sliema, Palazzo Capua, also referred to as Capua Palace, stands as an elegant Neoclassical palace dating back to the early 19th century in Sliema, Malta. Originally named Selma Hall by its Russian banker builder, it eventually came into the possession of the Prince of Capua, Carlo de Borbon, and his wife Penelope Caroline Smyth, who lent their names to the palace as it is known today.

During its construction, Palazzo Capua stood as the most captivating edifice in the area, boasting extensive countryside vistas while much of Sliema remained underdeveloped. Its distinct Neoclassical architecture, particularly featuring columns on its façade, has been a defining characteristic since its inception.[ Over the years, the surroundings of the palace witnessed significant urban development in the 19th and 20th centuries. As a result, Palazzo Capua underwent various adaptive reuses, and presently, it serves as a boutique hotel, while the St. James Capua Hospital was erected on the site of its former gardens.

The architectural credit for this splendid building goes to William Scamp.

Photographically the location is great for a day wedding - however the light from the chandeliers which are available in the hall are not enough and some additional light would certainly be useful.

AX Palazzo Capua offers five distinctive suites named after its past residents. The two biggest suites are the below:

PRINCE CHARLES OF CAPUA SUITE

This suite is named after Prince Charles of Capua, The Bordon Prince of Capua who, together with his wife Penelope, took up residence at the Palace. The extravagant sitting area and the beautiful wooden staircase dominate the historic surroundings of this suite.

PRINCE FRANCESCO SUITE

Prince Francesco was the Prince and Princess’s first-born son born at AX Palazzo Capua and this suite is symbolically named after this royal figure. Similar to the other suites in this collection, this one-level suite is equipped with a king-size bed and a plasma screen television
