There’s something quietly powerful about working with limitation. Strip away colour, reduce the palette, put us in one room and suddenly form begins to speak louder than anything else. This was the essence of our recent editorial photoshoot at AX Rosselli - a collaboration between FBalzan Photography, James Dimech, and two amazing models (Ludovica and Carmine) who brought life and movement to a world built on precision and restraint.
A Dialogue Between Paper and Space
From the moment I started talking with James two years ago, the vision felt aligned - creating art. James’ work doesn’t behave like traditional fashion. His garments are not simply worn — they are constructed, negotiated, and discovered. Paper, a material often dismissed as fragile or temporary, is transformed into something sculptural and commanding. Not permanent in time, but unforgettable in presence.
At the core of this shoot was a simple but profound idea: creating with limitations.
Pleats, layers, and modular constructions weren’t just design elements, they became a visual vocabulary. Each fold built upon the next, creating rhythm and structure.
Photographing this required a shift in mindset. It wasn’t about directing poses in the traditional sense. Instead, it was about observing and allowing the models to interact with the garments.
When Structure Becomes Story
This shoot wasn’t about showcasing outfits. It was about exploring a philosophy and experimentation. Working alongside James Dimech in a space like AX Rosselli reminded us that photography, at its best, is not about control — it’s about collaboration.
One of the main elements embraced during this shootout was using a monochrome / moody pallette approach in order to assist the visual narrative itself. Removing most of the colour allowed form to take centre stage. Light carved the garments. Shadows defined depth. Here, identity wasn’t expressed through embellishment or colour palettes, but through structure.
Between artist and material. Between light and form. Between vision and the unexpected.
And somewhere in between all of that, a story unfolds — not written, but constructed.
