Set atop Senglea’s centuries-old bastions within the Cugo Gran Maċina Grand Harbour, the Sheer Bastion, from its defensive and naval origins, is today, a venue for celebrations that go down in history.

General information

The location has unparalleled panoramic views from the historic waters-edge building of the Grand Harbour and Birgu City give way to stunning sunsets, exquisite firework displays and illuminated views of the cities. The venue itself has an elaborate story to tell with unique, architectural features beautifully illuminated by state of the art lighting. This is truly a stunning venue in which to celebrate an illic event.

The Sheer Bastion and Maċina below form part of the fortifications of Senglea, which were built by The Knights of St. John in 1554, before the Great Siege of Malta. The name ‘Maċina’ itself comes from ‘macchina’ a machine used to hoist and fit masts on galleys. The venue and its’ surroundings swell with history and are proud to be a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Although the venue is rather small in size, there are both indoor and outdoor options for the ceremony so no matter the weather we can ensure you a perfect day. From a photographic point of view the location is fantastic for a day wedding. If the wedding is to occur outside, then additional light would be suggested as the location can be a bit too dark at times.

The main features of the wedding location include:

  • Breathtaking view of Birgu

  • Natural Light

REAL WEDDINGS AT THE VENUE:

Anne and Marlon are a sweet couple, who decide to tie their knot in the parish church of Zabbar, which was appropriately prepared for the feast of the Madonna tal-Grazzja. Followed by this they celebrate together at the Sheer Bastion.

A lovely destination wedding between two lovebirds - Kennedy and Luke, who came all the way from the UK to celebrate their love in Malta. After a catholic ceremony in Valletta they have their reception at the Sheer Bastion.
