THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO A WEDDING IN VALLETTA

The intention of this guide is to help you if you are thinking of having or planning a wedding in Malta, specifically in Valletta. Through this guide I want to make you aware of the best locations, venues, churches and tips for their wedding day in Valletta.

Valletta is the capital city of our stunning island that provides the perfect backdrop for your special day. I personally love Valletta because of its vast history, variety in location possibilities, amazing hotels, venues and spots and also the photographic possibilities it provides.

Valletta was founded in 1566 by the Order of Saint John as a fortified city. It was named after Jean Parisot de Valette, the Grand Master of the Order who led the successful defense of Malta against the Ottoman Empire in the Great Siege of Malta.

The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its Baroque architecture. Valletta has hosted a number of important events, including the 24th Chess Olympiad in 1980 and the Valletta Summit on Migration in 2015. In 2018, Valletta was the European Capital of Culture.

Valletta has amazing locations to visit including the below:

  • Valletta City Gate: This new city gate was designed by Renzo Piano and was opened in 2014. It is a striking modern addition to the city.

  • Triton Fountain: This fountain is located in the center of Valletta. It is a beautiful example of Baroque sculpture.

  • St. John's Co-Cathedral: This magnificent Baroque church is one of the most important landmarks in Valletta. It houses Caravaggio's masterpiece, The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.

  • Grandmaster's Palace: This former residence of the Grand Masters of the Knights of Malta is now the official residence of the President of Malta. It is a stunning example of Baroque architecture. It is generally not possible to have a photoshoot in this location.

  • Auberge de Castille: This palace is now the office of the Prime Minister of Malta. It is a beautiful example of 16th-century architecture. It is generally not possible to have a photoshoot in this location.

  • Manoel Theatre: This is one of the oldest working theatres in Europe. It was built in 1731 and is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture. One can shoot in this theatre with the necessary permits.

  • Mediterranean Conference Centre: This former hospital is now a conference centre. It is a stunning example of 16th-century architecture. This location is particularly interesting as a wedding location as indicated in my detailed post here.

  • Saint James Cavalier: This former military fort is now a Centre of Creativity. It is a beautiful example of 16th-century architecture. It is possible to explore and shoot in this building.

  • Is-Suq tal-Belt: This covered market is a great place to find souvenirs and local produce. It is also possible to shoot in this building.

  • Upper and lower Barrakka Gardens: These gardens offer stunning views of the Grand Harbour. Open to the general public.

In summary, Valletta is an amazing location to get married and elope as it offers so many different areas of interest and intertwines history, culture and the sea. I have infact also written a very detailed guide on the different locations which I would shoot in Valletta - and you can find it in this detailed post here.

To ensure that every moment is captured, it's important to have an experienced wedding photographer. A photographer who specializes in weddings and elopements in Valletta will have an intimate knowledge of the best locations and lighting conditions, ensuring that your photos are truly breathtaking. By working with a local wedding photographer, you can create an album that showcases the beauty of the island and captures the magic of your big day.

WHY CHOOSE ME AS YOUR VALLETTA WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Franklin, is the owner and photographer behind FBalzan photography. I was born in 1985, in the picturesque village of Tarxien in the island of Malta, and pursued my studies and graduated as a mechanical engineer. TOP 5 REASONS TO GET MARRIED OR ELOPE IN VALLETTA

  1. Rich History and Architectural Charm

Valletta, with its rich history and architectural charm, offers a plethora of unique backdrops for your wedding photos. The city's stunning Baroque architecture, narrow streets, and grand palazzos provide an exquisite setting for capturing timeless moments. Imagine posing against the backdrop of the majestic St. John's Co-Cathedral or utilizing the historic facades as a captivating frame for your romantic portraits.

The city's historical significance adds depth to your wedding, infusing it with a sense of timelessness that transcends trends. The blend of ancient walls and modern love stories creates a striking contrast that elevates the visual narrative of your special day.

The charming alleyways lined with traditional Maltese balconies offer an intimate ambiance perfect for candid shots. These picturesque locations not only serve as beautiful settings but also add cultural significance to your wedding photos.

2. Scenic Views and Picturesque Landscapes

Valletta's enchanting coastal location provides scenic views and picturesque landscapes that are ideal for creating unforgettable wedding photographs. From panoramic vistas overlooking the Mediterranean Sea to hidden gardens nestled within the city walls, Valletta offers diverse natural beauty that complements any couple's style.

Imagine exchanging vows against the backdrop of azure waters or strolling hand in hand along the rugged coastline while being captured by a skilled photographer who can expertly weave these breathtaking scenes into your cherished memories.

The Upper Barrakka Gardens present an idyllic spot where you can capture sweeping views of Malta's Grand Harbour—a truly awe-inspiring location to immortalize your love story through photography. These natural wonders seamlessly intertwine with urban elements, offering endless possibilities for creating visually captivating compositions that reflect both romance and adventure.

3. Blend of Old-World Romance and Modern Elegance

In Valletta, couples have the opportunity to embrace a blend of old-world romance and modern elegance in their wedding photographs. Whether it’s exchanging vows at a catholic church or celebrating amidst contemporary art installations, this juxtaposition allows for a dynamic range of photo opportunities that cater to various tastes and preferences.

This creates a diversity of imagery possibilities and an intersection which is so unique. The manner in which Renzo Piano has restored the entrance to Valletta, the parliament building and the Triton Fountain, has really contributed to this architectural infusion. The old balconies for example, merge so well with the maltese stone and the overall feel of the city.

4. Easily accessible

Being the capital city and on the main island of Malta, Valletta is only 20minutes away from the main (and only) airport of Malta. Valletta is located between Sliema and the three cities and easily accessible also by ferry and by the local transportation (bus) service. From Valletta there is also a fast ferry service which can take you to the sister island of Gozo.

Furthermore, Valletta has a number of luxury, boutique hotels and a variety of accommodation possibilities for all tastes and budgets. Valletta is therefore the centre of the Malta both geographically and also from a transportation viewpoint.

VALLETTA - THE PERFECT BACKDROP FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY

Picture this: you're standing at the altar, bathed in the warm Mediterranean sunlight, surrounded by the breathtaking architecture of Valletta, Malta's captivating capital. The centuries-old cobblestone streets, adorned with vibrant flowers and quaint cafes, provide a romantic backdrop for your special day. As you exchange vows, the scent of freshly baked Maltese pastries mingles with the sea breeze, creating a truly unforgettable atmosphere.

The Grand Harbour, with its gleaming waters and bustling maritime activities, offers an equally enchanting backdrop for your wedding photos. Alternatively if you prefer, you can stroll in the quiet unknown streets of Valletta - away from the main touristic street or to the quieter Valletta breakwater.

When planning your wedding in Valletta, it's important to keep in mind that the island is a popular tourist destination. This means that you should book your wedding venue well in advance to avoid disappointment. It's also worth considering hiring a wedding planner who can help take care of all the details for you, leaving you free to enjoy your special day.
